A New Year’s Day Reflection
Stepping into the corridor of a new year often comes with excitement, so much that it can overshadow the need to pause and strategize for what lies ahead. In my previous post, “What I’m Letting Go of Before the Year Ends,” I intentionally released what no longer serves me.
Now, as I step into a new year, I’m being deliberate about what I carry with me. I see the year ahead as a journey, and I’m mindful of what I place in my luggage choosing only what will contribute to a meaningful and successful walk through another season of life.
Building an ‘I’ with God
More than plans or goals, I’m carrying my walk with God into the new year. It is the quintessence of how I’m stepping forward.
Faith life is often downplayed in our generation, but it is becoming increasingly pertinent to be intentional about a close walk with God. Intimacy with Him is, without doubt, the most vital thing to carry into the new year. My goal is to interact with Him as a Father and daughter, seeking alignment in every step ahead
Consistency
You know what the good book says about counting the cost before embarking on a quest. This is what embracing consistency is leading me unto. I have personally struggled with keeping up with a certain routine that gets tiring having to start all over. Talk about skin care, quiet time, workouts, even my lessons on Duolingo. But this year I’m carrying consistency like a business.
Intentional Happiness
Life is not a bed of roses. I know there’s going to be highs and lows at different points in time. But when the down period comes, I won’t stay down. I would pick myself UP and keep moving. Hmm! The thought of it alone is refreshing.
You know, sometimes we don’t deliberately make mistakes or fall into misfortune. Sometimes, life just happens. Those moments when depression quickly hurries to your doorstep, to sit and brood with you. Oh there would be no time to do that silly thing again! Music, praises, the word of God, dancing, traveling, eating, cooking… Haha! There just has to be a way to throw depression outta the house and back to whatever doom it must have come from. We mueve forward, nevertheless!

Self-discipline
Growing up, we had some older figure responsible for us, to correct us whenever we went out of line. Adulthood, however, comes with a sobering question: what happens when there is no one left to point out our misconduct?
This new year, I’m carrying self-discipline. I will spend my time and money wisely, maximise opportunities, and remain accountable to what is required of me, even when it demands more. I won’t scroll my phone unproductively, live or eat unhealthily, or stay out late without purpose
Taking Growth Serious
“What if growth isn’t a moment, but a commitment we make daily?” Carrying growth into the new year has shifted my mindset. Growth is no longer an event I wait for, but a journey I commit to daily. Decluttering my space became a deliberate act, making room not just physically, but inwardly, for a better version of me to emerge.
This is my decision to grow beyond where the previous year met me. A conscious stretching in every area of my life, personally, spiritually, and in my career. Growth, this year, is intentional.
Savings and Investment
Who says a child is too small to save or invest? Being intentional with my finances makes it clear that I need to carry the habit of saving and investing into the new year. It is important to make reasonable investments and savings. I would be the one to say when to spend the money, not the other way round. You know that point of your life when you have to limit your basic needs and your pocket says no? It’s actually different from overspending or lacking the ability to save, because a lot of people can’t seem to differentiate.
I will delay gratification to make necessary investments, because going broke repeatedly no longer makes sense. I will be meticulous with my expenses, prioritizing needs over wants until I can comfortably afford anything, anytime.
Punctuality
Time really is of the essence, yet many of us struggle to keep up, not just with events, but with appointments. Some even appear late on moments as significant as their own wedding day. Being punctual is a life pillar than a mere elementary school term. I’m always running late, and it has become a habitual thing for me. So henceforth, I hope to be punctual to appointments and places I ought to be in time to avoid missing out on important things.
Punctuality is another tool I’m carrying into the new year. I feel the need to be on time for myself, because time truly waits for no one.
Taking Initiative
Oh yes! No more standing in one spot, fidgeting, and thinking the worst of an idea before even giving it a try.
This year is for taking initiatives. Taking up challenges (of course, the meaningful ones) and coming out stronger and better than before. There are so many things one can do at different stages of life. Allowing fear of the unknown or past setbacks to really set you back and prevent you from making a move is the worst.
It’s all about choosing movement over hesitation, action over endless thinking and growth over stagnancy.
See ya at the finish line
Conclusion
Living with purpose is what walking into a new year inspires. Carrying these values with me is one of the major keys to living intentionally and making a positive impact in this new season.
